Step-by-step client deployment

by paul last modified 2009-05-12 09:07

This walkthrough assumes that you are using ldms_client_package.exe to deploy the inventory scanning extensions to your workstations. Feel free to use other methods (such as batch files) for customized deployments-- they are supported, but not documented.

STEP 1

Download ldms_client_node_install.exe if you haven't already.

STEP 2

Copy ldms_client_node_install.exe to the share in your network you normally distribute applications from.

STEP 3

Add ldms_client_node_install.exe to the LANDesk repository.  This is built as an EXE package, so right-click My distribution packages, go to New distribution package and select New EXE package.

Follow the Distribution packages wizard, specifying the share you copied ldms_client_node_install.exe to.  No command line switches are needed.  The package will deploy silently, unless you allow your Delivery method to ask the user for permission. Similarly, it will not reboot unless the delivery method allows that. I recommend using a Prerequisite query as well, so that you can prevent

STEP 4

Make sure you are using a Delivery method that has the silent install option selected and reboot blocked.

USEFUL SIDE NOTE:  there is no point in selecting Use multicast to deploy files (under Network usage).  You will nearly always want to select Use download from source to deploy files, then under Bandwidth select Limit remote download (per subnet) to one device at a time.  Configure the bandwidth percentage to suit your needs.

STEP 5

Create your Scheduled task to deploy ldms_client_node_install.exe.  The next time your clients are scheduled to run an inventory scan they will automatically send all of the newly configured data.  For an idea of what that inventory data will look like, click here.
