Speed up Mac Inventory Scans

Make it go faster

Generally speaking, a Mac has a lot of multimedia files on it. Furthermore, it's often supposed to -- it's not like your organization is going to get mad at a producerfor having several gigs of music or a scientist for having thousands of photos.

This means that the default scan settings will take way too long. You can disable Multimedia File scanning in the agent config, but this only takes affect on delta scans. I'm sure there's a good reason why, and I just can't remember it. Therefore, every full scan will take a long time. How long? Upwards of 30 minutes is not unexpected for a typical IT MacBook Pro, so an end user working in the arts is probably looking at many hours. On the good side, it's low priority and they won't notice.

Anyway, here's a lot of time wasted looking for things you probably don't care about, so let's make it stop happening. To kill multimedia scans for good, edit c:\program files\landesk\managementsuite\ldlogon\ldappl3.template. Find the MacMultimediaExtensions section and edit it to have no extensions. This will cause it to stop tracking multimedia at all (there's an equivalent for PCs as well a few lines higher, so you can still crack down on people who aren't supposed to use their iPod on their work PC).

As long as you're here, it might be a good idea to remove the .dmg from MacScanExtensions too. Anyway, after you save the file, you'll need to go into the console and publish the change; this is done by selecting Software License Monitoring and clicking the third button from the right (tooltip is "Make Available to Clients").
