Wake up machines across subnets with Wake-On-WAN

by MarXtar — last modified 2008-07-25 15:31

With the MarXtar Wake-On-WAN for LANDesk free plug-in you can now wake up machines on remote subnets through the right-click menu of the LANDesk console.

With normal LANDesk Wake-On-LAN (WoL), the command is sent from the LANDesk console to the remote machine via a subnet directed broadcast.  This type of communication is normally blocked, effectively preventing the use of WoL except via the use of a dummy software distribution package distributed to a target list using Targeted Multicasting (TMC).  The reason why TMC can do this is because a local machine on the remote subnet is chosen as a representative and that machine sends the WoL magic packet.

A drawback with the model mentioned above is that the machine will also get switched off again since that is a standard part of the software distribution mechanism.

MarXtar have created a free plug-in to the LANDesk Management console that allows right-click Wake-On-LAN to be sent to one or more machines including those distributed across multiple subnets.  It manages this in a similar way to TMC as it will choose a machine on the remote subnet from those listed in the inventory and instruct it to perform the WoL.  It does not use TMC but does use the LANDesk secure transport mechanism.  Best of all, there is no auto-shutdown to workaround.

The product is freely available for use and can be found on the MarXtar website http://www.marxtar.com.  Access details directly at http://www.marxtar.co.uk/products/WakeOnWAN/LANDesk-Wake-On-WAN.htm .
