How to programmatically identify the LANDesk version

If you're writing a script for yourself, you already know what version you're running on; if you want to publish it here, you might need to identify whether this is LANDesk 8.7 or LANDesk 8.0... There are a number of kludgy ways, but the right way is to use the database. Just SELECT mdversion from METASYSTEMS -- it will return the schema version, which is arguably more important than the "release". On my 8.7.1 core, I get 8.70.5.0.
